Here is part two of our breakdown of the top four medical assistant certification exams to be keeping an eye out for. This is a continuation of part one so if you haven’t read the first part, read it here.

National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) from the National Center for Competency Testing

Criteria Required to Take the Exam:

  • If you are currently a student in an NCCT authorized school:

    • Exam Fee: $90
    • You must have a high school diploma/GED
    • Submit a copy of your medical assistant training certificate of completion or medical assistant diploma or official transcript
    • Must apply within two years of completing your training program

  • If you are a graduate from an NCCT authorized school within the past five years:

    • Must have high school diploma or GED
    • Submit a copy of your medical assistant training certificate of completion or medical assistant diploma or official transcript
    • If applying within six months of graduation, the exam fee is $90 but if you test more than six months after graduating, the exam fee is $135

  • If you have two years of experience as a medical assistant practitioner within the past five years:

  • If you were in the military:

    • Exam Fee: $90
    • Within the last five years:
      • Must have high school diploma or GED
      • Must have a copy of your SMART transcript or DD214 proving that you completed a formal medical services training program
  • OR

  • If you are a member of the United States Armed Forces (active-duty, retired, veteran) or a military spouse

Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) from American Medical Technologists

Criteria Required to Take the Exam

Exam Fee: $120

  • If you are a graduate:

    • If you graduated less than four years ago (recent graduate):
      • Need official final transcript proving graduation from an MA program.
    • If you graduated over four years ago:
      • Need official final transcript proving graduation from an MA program.
      • Three years of documented work experience in the past five years (must include both clinical and administrative duties)

  • If you were in the military:

    • If you graduated less than four years ago:
      • Need a copy of your Joint Services Transcript proving that you graduated from a formal medical services training program
    • If you graduated over four years ago:
      • Need a copy of your Joint Services Transcript proving that you graduated from a formal medical services training program
      • Three years of documented relevant work experience in the past five years
      • DD214 form (if you were discharged)
      • Copy of recent evaluations covering the required work experience timeframe
    • If you have at least five years of work experience in the last seven years:
      • Need a copy of your high school diploma or GED
      • Documented work experience that can be verified by the AMT
      • Copy of your CPR card that includes hands-on-training
    • If you are an instructor:
      • If you have at least five years of teaching experience:
        • A copy of your transcript
        • Documented work experience
      • If you have less than five years of teaching experience but at least one year:
        • You must provide documentation of at least three years of full-time clinical work experience
